DescriptionAlthough none of Lettner’s works produced before 1945 are known to survive today, his oeuvre is said to have comprised approximately 5,000 works across a wide range of media. His works from the 1950’s are characterized by a strong tendency toward figural objects, often executed with emphatic black contours. In his later works, however, Lettner increasingly departed from representational form, as demonstrated in Raum Nr. 5 (Room No. 5). In this work, color functions as a counterpoint that is palpably removed from analytical or geometric construction. According to Lettner, this approach enabled a playful experimentation with pictorial development, from which representational associations could gradually crystallize — often in the form of dreamscapes or mythological scenarios —thereby generating fantastical imagery.
